The Early Life of Peter Donders
Born on October 27, 1809, Peter Donders was the son of a poor family with many children. His poverty forced him to drop out of secondary school and work in his father's weaving workshop.
Aspiring for the Seminary
At the age of 22, Donders began studying Latin, hoping to enter the seminary. However, due to his weak academic abilities and poor health, he was denied admission. In 1831, he was hired as a servant at the seminary, attending lectures as an auditor in his spare time.
Roadblocks to Monastic Life
The seminary administration, aware of his financial constraints, suggested that Donders consider joining a religious order. He attempted to join the Franciscans and Redemptorists in 1837 but was rejected by both.
Acceptance into the Seminary
On October 4, 1837, Donders was finally accepted into the seminary after a persistent pursuit. Inspired by a missionary from Suriname, he resolved to serve as a missionary there.
The Suriname Mission
Donders was ordained a priest on June 5, 1841, and embarked on his mission to Suriname in 1842. For 14 years, he ministered to enslaved Africans and indigenous people in Paramaribo.
Batavia Island: Service to Lepers
In 1856, Donders relocated to Batavia Island, where a leper colony was located. He dedicated himself to charitable, social, and pastoral care, tending to the needs of those afflicted with leprosy.
Joining the Redemptorists
At the age of 58, Donders became acquainted with the spirituality of the Redemptorists and decided to join the order. He entered the Redemptorist monastery on November 1, 1866, and took his vows on June 24, 1867.
Return to Batavia Island
On November 17, 1885, Donders returned to Batavia Island to care for his leper parishioners once more. He remained there until his death on January 14, 1887.
Veneration and Beatification
Immediately after Donders' death, a cult of devotion to him as a saint emerged. On December 1, 1982, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, and his feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on January 14.
