His career in financial planning began in the summer of 2000 at MetLife Securities, a company that helps people achieve their financial dreams. After two years, Dunn left the company to start his own, Advanced Planning Solutions Inc. His main focus was educating people on essential money management skills, including budgeting, cash flow management, and debt management.

In 2004, Dunn gained the nickname "Pete the Planner" and decided to use this name when appearing on television. In 2006, he published the book "What Your Dad Never Taught You About Budgeting," which led to a series of TV appearances on WISH-TV and a segment called "Pete's Money Tips."

In May 2008, Dunn launched the radio show "Skills Your Dad Never Taught You with Pete the Planner" on WXNT. The weekly podcast was also available on iTunes. He also regularly appeared on the nationally syndicated radio show "Your Time with Kim Iverson."
