Sean Hannity: A Provocative Broadcaster and Conservative Icon
Early Life and EducationSean Patrick Hannity was born in New York City on December 30, 1961, as the youngest of four children. His mother, Lillian, was a stenographer and proofreader at a county jail, while his father, Hugh, worked as a court officer in family court. Hannity attended the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Hempstead, NY, followed by St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale, NY. He briefly attended both New York University and Adelphi University but dropped out from both.
Early Broadcasting Career at KCSB
In 1989, Hannity became a volunteer general manager at KCSB-FM at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he hosted his first radio show. The show aired for approximately 40 hours per week. "I was not very good," Hannity later recalled. "I was terrible."
Controversies surrounding Hannity's show on KCSB included his promotion of the book "The AIDS Coverup" by Gene Antonio, which contained inaccurate claims about the disease. Another controversial moment occurred when Hannity told a lesbian caller, "I feel sorry for your son." The university administration ultimately terminated the show after Hannity organized a defense campaign with the American Civil Liberties Union of Santa Barbara, arguing that KCSB had violated his First Amendment rights. The station refused to apologize to Hannity or provide him with more airtime.
Prominence at WGST and Fox News
After leaving KCSB, Hannity promoted himself as "the most talked-about college radio host in America." He was hired by WVNN in Athens, Alabama, to host a midday talk show. In 1992, Hannity moved to WGST in Atlanta, taking over the time slot previously held by Neal Boortz.
In September 1996, Sean Hannity joined the fledgling Fox News, then called "FNC: Fair and Balanced News." He co-hosted the show "Hannity and LTBD" with Alan Colmes, which later became known as "Hannity & Colmes." Hannity left WGST in 1997 and became a late-night host on WABC in New York City. From January 1998 to late 2013, he hosted a midday show on WABC. From 2004 to 2013, Hannity also hosted a 3-6 PM show on WOR in New York City.
