Early Life and Education
Wolfgang Gruber was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. He attended primary school there from 1947 to 1959, and later graduated from high school in the same city.
Academic Career
From 1959 to 1966, Gruber studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna and the University of Kansas. He earned his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1966, with a dissertation entitled "Untersuchung über das Produkt inhomogener Linearformen" (Investigation of the Product of Inhomogeneous Linear Forms).
Professional Experience
Following his graduation, Gruber served as an assistant and associate professor at the Vienna University of Technology from 1966 to 1971. He then became Head of the Department of Mathematical Analysis at the University of Linz from 1971 to 1976. In 1976, Gruber returned to the Vienna University of Technology as Head of the Department of Mathematical Analysis, a position he has held to this day.
Mathematical Society Leadership
Gruber served as President of the Austrian Mathematical Society from 1978 to 1984. He has also been a member of the editorial boards of several mathematical journals, including Journal of Number Theory, Monatshefte für Mathematik, Contributions to Algebra and Geometry, Rendiconti del Seminario Matematico, and Contributions to Discrete Mathematics.
Research Contributions
Gruber's research primarily focuses on geometric number theory, particularly the study of products of linear forms. He is well-known for his work on Minkowski's problem. Gruber has also made significant contributions to the approximation of convex bodies, optimal quantization theory, and its applications to probability theory and numerical integration.
