Early Life and Education

Vincent Rijmen was born on October 16, 1970, in Leuven, Belgium. In 1993, he earned an engineering degree in electronics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. During his undergraduate studies, Rijmen received a grant from the National Fund for Scientific Research, which allowed him to pursue a PhD at the same university under the supervision of Dr. Joan Daemen.

Development of Rijndael and AES

In 1997, Rijmen and Daemen collaborated on a block cipher algorithm called Rijndael. This algorithm was later selected as the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in October 2000. AES has become one of the most widely used encryption algorithms in the world.

Career and Research

Rijmen continued his research in cryptography after earning his doctorate, primarily focusing on symmetric cryptosystems. He has made significant contributions to the development of other cryptographic algorithms, including the WHIRLPOOL hash function and the Anubis, KHAZAD, NOEKEON, and SHARK block ciphers.

Academic and Industry Experience

From 2001 to 2003, Rijmen worked as a principal cryptographer at Cryptomathic, while also serving as a part-time professor at the Institute for Applied Information Processing and Communications at the Technical University of Graz, Austria. From 2004 to 2007, he held a full-time professorship at the same institution. In October 2007, Rijmen returned to COSIC as an associate professor, where he continues to research the application of mathematical theory to the design of cryptographic primitives.

Recognition and Affiliations

In 2002, Rijmen was named one of the 100 most outstanding innovators under the age of 35 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review TR35. He has also been elected a senior member of the IEEE since November 2011.
