Peter Laughner: A Pioneer of Cleveland's Alternative Rock Scene
Early Life and Musical BeginningsPeter Laughner was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter born in Bay Village, Ohio. Despite his relatively low profile, he was hailed by music critic Richie Unterberger as "arguably the single most important catalyst in the birth of alternative rock in Cleveland." Laughner's musical journey began with stints in various bands, including Mr. Charlie, Cinderella Backstreet, Peter & the Wolves, The Blue Drivers, and Friction.
Influence of Lester Bangs and Musical Heroes
Laughner's musical tastes were heavily influenced by rock critic Lester Bangs. Like Bangs, he had a deep appreciation for Lou Reed, bluesmen like Robert Johnson, and folk artists like Woody Guthrie. He also admired the guitar work of Tom Verlaine and Richard Thompson.
Notable Collaborations
Laughner's most significant work was with Rocket From the Tombs and Pere Ubu. He also wrote for Creem magazine, showcasing his talent as a journalist. While briefly considered as a replacement for Richard Lloyd in Television, the plan never materialized due to resistance from Lloyd.
Limited Recorded Output and Unofficial Releases
Despite his impact, Laughner's recorded output was limited. He only entered a recording studio with Pere Ubu once, but left behind a collection of unreleased material, primarily low-quality demos and rehearsal recordings.
Personal Struggles and Tragic Death
Unfortunately, Laughner grappled with alcohol and drug use, which ultimately contributed to his untimely demise. He passed away in 1977 at the age of 24 from acute pancreatitis. Rumors of suicide were later dispelled by a letter he wrote to Cleveland singer Ruby Port, expressing his plans for the future. Laughner intended to move to the countryside, continue writing music, and address his health issues. Tragically, his aspirations were never realized.
