Biography of Tony Melendez
Tony Melendez is a musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for playing the guitar with his feet. He was born Jose Antonio Melendez Rodriguez in 1962 in Rivas, Nicaragua. From birth, Tony did not have both arms, so he had to learn to play musical instruments and adapt to life using his feet.

As a child, Tony quickly adapted to using prosthetic arms, but he also developed dexterity in his feet. Eventually, he no longer needed the prosthetics as he could do everything that regular people do with their hands using his feet. Even as a child, Tony showed his musical talent and began playing the piano (also with his feet) before transitioning to the guitar. He started composing music and writing his own songs, with the local churchgoers being his first audience.

Tony grew up in a Catholic household, and his parents instilled in him a love for God from an early age. He became interested in faith and the church during his middle school years. Initially, he dreamed of becoming a priest, but his physical limitations, specifically the lack of a thumb and index finger, prevented him from pursuing that path. However, music remained an important part of Tony Melendez's life and became even more significant.

One of the most memorable and emotionally powerful moments in Tony's musical career was when he performed for Pope John Paul II in 1987. During the Pope's visit to the United States, Tony played the song "Never Be the Same" on his guitar using his feet. Those who have witnessed Tony's performances are always impressed by his technique—placing the guitar on the floor, sitting on a stool, and playing with his toes while making seemingly effortless movements. He sings his melodic songs with a pleasant voice, and his concerts often receive standing ovations.

The Pope was deeply moved by Tony's performance in 1987 and even approached the stage to kiss him in front of the astonished audience. Today, Tony Melendez's videos on YouTube have been viewed by over three million people, despite him only performing religious music. After that fateful day, Tony went on to perform for the Pope several more times, but it was the first encounter that changed his life forever. Following the Pope's blessing and approval, Tony Melendez became a true celebrity.
Currently, Tony Melendez is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades and has released multiple music albums. His concert schedule is booked well in advance. He resides in Branson, Missouri, with his wife Lynn, and has also written a book titled "A Gift of Hope." Tony Melendez admits that he never forgets the words spoken by the Pope that continue to inspire him: "I want you to continue giving hope to people."
