Born on March 30, 1926, in Huntington, West Virginia, Marshall Lyle was the son of Ralph and Jean LaCock. After his father's passing when Marshall was ten, he moved to New York City with his mother, a costume designer. Following high school, he was drafted into the army in 1944 and deployed to Italy, where he initially served in artillery before becoming a disc jockey on a radio station in Naples. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Marshall embarked on a comedy career in the 1950s alongside Tommy Noonan, performing in nightclubs and appearing in minor film roles. Despite occasional appearances, he struggled to secure a steady foothold in the entertainment industry until his friend, Morey Amsterdam, recommended him as a replacement for Bert Parks on the game show "The Hollywood Squares" in 1966.

Initially hesitant, Marshall accepted the job to prevent rival comedian Dan Rowan from obtaining it. He anticipated a 13-week stint before returning to Broadway but ended up hosting for 15 years, producing over 5,000 episodes. The show's longevity as a daytime network and syndicated staple made Marshall as familiar to audiences as the celebrity panelists.

"The Hollywood Squares" and Beyond

Marshall's easygoing and unflappable demeanor complemented the acerbic wit of panelists like Amsterdam, Rose Marie, Paul Lynde, Ian Murray, and Wally Cox. "The Hollywood Squares" was canceled by NBC in 1980 but continued in syndication through 1981.

After the show's finale, Marshall continued to appear on game shows and play character roles. He returned to a revived version of "The Hollywood Squares" in 2002 as a panelist during a game show week hosted by Tom Bergeron.

Personal Life

Marshall married three times: to Nadean R. Teefur (1947-1973), Sally Carter-Inat (1977-1983), and Lori Stewart (1989). He had four children and two stepchildren from previous marriages. His son, Pete, was a former Major League Baseball player, while his other son, David LaCock, passed away from COVID-19 in 2021. Marshall resided in Palm Desert, California.
