Peter Sagan: The Slovakian Cycling Legend
Early Life and CareerPeter Sagan was born on January 26, 1990, in Žilina, Slovakia. He is the youngest of three sons and a daughter. Sagan's older sister raised him, as his parents were often busy with their small grocery store. His brother, Juraj, also became a cyclist and competed on the same team as Peter.
Peter began cycling at age 9 in his hometown. His flashy style, wearing tennis shoes and a t-shirt, drew attention when he showed up for the Slovakian Championships on his sister's bike. He had mistakenly sold his bike, and there was no spare bike from his sponsor. Nevertheless, he won the race on a regular bicycle with poor brakes and grip.
Demonstrating success on both road and mountain bikes, Sagan won the Junior Cross-Country Mountain Bike World Championships in 2008.
Professional Career
In 2010, Sagan turned professional with Liquigas-Cannondale. He won his first race on the third stage of Paris-Nice and went on to win the sprint classification. At the Tour de Romandie, he won a stage and placed second twice. Sagan also won two sprint finishes at the Tour of California, again leading the points classification.
In 2011, Sagan continued to dominate stage races, winning stages at the Tour of Poland and Giro di Sardegna. He made his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España, where he won three stages, more than any other rider.
Breakthrough on the Tour de France
In 2012, Sagan began winning stages in multi-day races. At the 2012 Tour de France, he won three of the first seven stages. He held the green jersey throughout the race, solidifying his status as one of the most promising cyclists of his generation.
Continued Success
Over the next few years, Sagan established himself as a dominant force in cycling. He won an unprecedented seven green jerseys at the Tour de France, a record for the race. He also claimed multiple stage wins at the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España.
World Championships
Peter Sagan has made history as the only cyclist to win three consecutive UCI Road World Championships titles, from 2015 to 2017. He also won the European Road Race Championship in 2016.
