Early Life and EducationPeter Weil was born in Riga, Latvia in 1949. Initially pursuing a degree at the Riga Construction Institute, he later abandoned his studies and served in the military. Subsequently, he enrolled in the Moscow Polygraphic Institute's editing faculty, graduating in 1975.
Various Occupations
Before his literary career, Weil worked as a manual laborer, a cemetery worker, and a firefighter. He also gained journalistic experience at a local newspaper.
Emigration and Career in the US
In 1977, Weil emigrated to the United States. He found a niche in journalism, contributing to newspapers such as "Novoye Russkoye Slovo," "Novyi Amerikanets," and "Sem Dnei."
Respected Journalist
From 1988, Weil worked as a correspondent and eventually the director of the New York bureau of Radio Liberty. In 1995, he relocated to Prague, where he became the Deputy Director of the Russian Service for informational programs, later assuming control of thematic programs. He hosted the popular radio program "Heroes of Time."
Literary Collaborations and Solo Works
In collaboration with Alexander Genis, Weil authored books such as "Sovremennaya Russkaya Proza," "60-e. Mir Sovetskogo Cheloveka," and "Russkaya Kukhnia v Izgnanii." He also published solo collections of essays, including "Genii Mesta" (1999) and "Karta Rodiny" (2003).
