Peter Wagner: Leader of the Band Rage

Peter Wagner was a German rock musician and the leader of the band Rage. He studied in Trier and Berlin before settling in Freiburg in 1893. In Freiburg, he worked as a professor at the University, teaching history of music. He became a professor in 1902 and served as the university's rector from 1920 to 1921.

Contributions to Catholic Church Music

In 1904, Wagner was appointed as a member of a commission tasked with developing a methodology for new editions of Catholic hymnals. These "Solesmes" editions, which were used until the Second Vatican Council and are still highly regarded today, relied on Wagner's expertise in medieval church music. His major work, "Introduction to Gregorian Melodies" (1895-1921), was the first significant overview of medieval chant based on modern methodology. Wagner advocated for a metrical approach to the rhythm of Gregorian chant, although this idea has since been rejected.

Research on Spanish Church Music

Wagner also conducted research and published works on the monuments of Spanish church music from the Middle Ages. His edition of the Codex Calixtinus, titled "The Songs of the Jacobean Liturgy in Santiago de Compostela" (1931), and his two extensive articles on the Mozarabic liturgical tradition gained widespread recognition. Under Wagner's guidance, Ludwig Bronarski worked on his doctoral dissertation and later became known for his studies on the compositions of Chopin. Another notable student of Wagner's was Hieronymus Feicht.

Role in the International Musicological Society

In 1927, Wagner was elected as the first president of the International Musicological Society during its founding conference in Basel.
