Childhood and Pre-War Life
Born in 1915 in the city of Saratov, Russia, Petr Fedorovich Batavin grew up in the family of a worker. Despite receiving only a primary education, he worked as a postman, on the construction of the Penza-Balashov railway, and in the Saratov City Housing Administration before the war.
Military Service and Capture
Batavin enlisted in the Soviet Army in 1941 and served for three periods: 1941, 1943-1945, and 1945. His military career spanned the Western, 2nd, and 3rd Ukrainian fronts. During this time, he spent over a year in enemy captivity.
Liberation of Europe and Danube Crossing
After being liberated, Batavin actively participated in the liberation of Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. In November 1944, his unit reached the Danube River and prepared to cross. Batavin was selected as part of a four-man group tasked with seizing and holding a bridgehead on the western bank.
Heroic Actions on the Danube
On November 24, Batavin and his comrades stealthily crossed the Danube in a boat. They captured a machine gun and held their positions until their unit crossed the river. During six counterattacks, Batavin single-handedly repelled the enemy, destroying over 20 soldiers and officers. For his bravery and determination, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on March 24, 1945.
Post-War Life and Legacy
Batavin was demobilized in September 1945 and lived in his hometown of Saratov until his death in 1978. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Gold Star, and two medals for his service in the Great Patriotic War.
