Alexander Nikolaevich Komarov: A Soviet Hero
Early Life and CareerAlexander Nikolaevich Komarov was born into a peasant family in the village of Izyuk, Omsk Oblast, in the Soviet Union. After graduating from a pedagogical college in 1939, he worked as the director of an elementary school.
Military Service and World War II
In 1941, Komarov was conscripted into the Red Army and assigned to the Pacific Fleet. He saw action in the Soviet-Japanese War, which began in August 1945.
Landing at Seishin
On August 13, 1945, Komarov participated in the landing of a 177-man marine detachment in the Japanese port of Seishin (Seisin). His reconnaissance group established a foothold and attacked the enemy.
Heroic Actions
During the ensuing battle, Komarov risked his life to destroy a Japanese machine gun nest with grenades, sustaining his first wound in the process. He also engaged in hand-to-hand combat, killing a Japanese officer.
Capture of Seishin and Subsequent Fighting
Seishin was eventually captured, but Japanese attacks continued. Komarov raised a red flag during one of the fiercest battles, inspiring his fellow fighters. He later rescued his commander from danger.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his extraordinary courage and heroics, Komarov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on September 14, 1945.
Post-War Career
After the war, Komarov remained in the navy, graduating from the Military-Political Academy in 1953. He retired with the rank of Captain 1st Rank in 1974.
Later Life and Legacy
Following his retirement, Komarov worked as the director of a tourist base. He passed away on August 17, 1982. Streets and parks in the Omsk Oblast are named in his honor.
