Childhood and Early Life

Pyotr Alexandrovich Ignatyev was born on May 1, 1918, in the village of Adashevo, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia. Orphaned at a young age, he moved to Yuryevka, Dnipropetrovsk Region, where he completed his primary education.

Military Service and Capture

Ignatyev served on the Hungarian border before the outbreak of World War II. During the retreat, he was captured by the Germans at Dnipropetrovsk.

Escape and Partisan Activities

While in captivity, Ignatyev met his future wife, Nadezhda Fedotovna. She ransomed him from a policeman and took him to Yuryevka. Ignatyev participated in the partisan movement and helped Nadezhda farm their land.

Heroism at the San River

In 1943, Ignatyev joined the 130th Guards Artillery Regiment. On August 9, 1944, at the San River in Poland, he and his gun crew destroyed three enemy tanks. When his gun was disabled, he continued fighting alone with grenades and an automatic rifle.

Liberation of Europe

Ignatyev fought his way through Europe as a member of the 1st Ukrainian Front. Despite not reaching Berlin, he participated in the liberation of Prague.

Victory Parade and Post-War Life

Ignatyev marched in the Victory Parade in Moscow on June 24, 1945. He returned to Dnipropetrovsk and worked as a foreman at the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Equipment Plant.

Heroism in Peacetime

On July 10, 1965, Ignatyev sacrificed his life to save a child from a downed power line.

Legacy

Ignatyev was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union and other medals. His Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union is preserved at the Museum of the Great Patriotic War at the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Equipment Plant, where he has a dedicated exhibit.
