Early Life and Education
Alexander Ivanov was born in a rural village and raised at a prestigious gymnasium in Moscow.
Naval and Civil Service
From 1790 to 1797, Ivanov served in the navy before transitioning to a civil service role in Moscow, where he remained until his death in 1816.
Literary Beginnings
Ivanov's literary career began with poetry publications in the journal "Ipokrena." He also contributed to various other publications.
Dramatic Works
Ivanov gained recognition as a playwright and translator. His successful dramas included "The Family of the Starichkovs" (1808) and comedies such as "Not All That Glitters Is Gold" and "The Suitors, or Live and Learn" (both 1808).
Historical Tragedy
Ivanov's masterpiece was the tragedy "Marfa Posadnitsa, or The Conquest of Novgorod" (1809), based on a story by Nikolai Karamzin. It was staged with great acclaim.
Legacy
Ivanov's collected works, including both original pieces and translations, were published in 1824 with a biography by Alexander Merzlyakov. His contributions to Russian literature continue to be celebrated.
