Early Life and Military Career
Born on February 9, 1779, Pyotr Yakovlevich Kornilov hails from a Pskov noble family. In 1787, he began his military career and fought against Sweden the following year, sustaining a bullet wound.
Italian and Alpine Campaigns
Kornilov's distinguished record includes participation in Alexander Suvorov's Italian and Alpine Campaigns (1799-1800). He commanded battalions and regiments at decisive battles such as Adda, Trebbia, Novi, Saint-Gotthard, and the infamous Devil's Bridge.
Napoleonic Wars
In the Napoleonic Wars, Kornilov commanded the 28th Jaeger Regiment, leading them to victories against the Turks at Shumla (1810) and Ruschuk (1810). During the 1812 campaign, he played a crucial role in rescuing his unit from encirclement at Wyżwa.
Campaigns of 1813-1814
Kornilov's exploits continued in 1813, with involvement in the Siege of Thorn, battles at Königswartha and Bautzen, and the Battle of Katzbach. In 1814, he fought at Brienne and Laon, capturing numerous prisoners and artillery.
Later Career and Legacy
After the war, Kornilov served as commander of the 17th Division (1827) and was promoted to lieutenant general in 1818. His decorated career culminated with the Order of St. George, 3rd Class. Kornilov passed away in 1828 during the Siege of Giurgiu and is believed to have been buried in either Bucharest or his estate in the Kholm district.
