Early Life and Military Education
Prince Georgy Orbeliani was born in 1853. He received his military education at the prestigious Page Corps and began his service as an officer in the Leib-Guard Hussar Regiment.
Military Service during the Russo-Turkish War
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, Orbeliani fought on the Caucasian front and distinguished himself in battle. He was awarded the Order of St. Anna, 4th Class, and the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th Class, with swords and ribbon for his bravery.
Explorations in Afghanistan and India
Following the Russian victory over the Afghans at Kushka, Orbeliani was sent to the Transcaspian region. He participated in the Russo-Afghan Border Commission (1885-1886) and later served as a military representative for Russia at British-Indian Army maneuvers in 1898-1899.
Russo-Japanese War and Honors
In 1904, Orbeliani was promoted to Major General and appointed commander of the Caucasian Cavalry Brigade. He fought in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, where he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 1st Class, with swords, the Order of St. Anna, 1st Class, with swords, and the Golden Weapon with the inscription "For Bravery."
Later Military Positions
In 1910, Orbeliani was promoted to Lieutenant General and assigned as head of the Transcaspian Cavalry Brigade. He was placed on reserve in November 1913 but was reinstated during World War I and served under Prince Alexander of Oldenburg in medical evacuation services.
Family and Personal Life
Georgy Orbeliani married Princess Mariam Alexandrovna Orbeliani. They had two children:
Prince Irakly Orbeliani (1890-1937)
Princess Mariam Orbeliani (1899-1947), who married Prince Nikolai Dadiani
Death and Legacy
Prince Georgy Orbeliani passed away in 1924. He left behind a legacy of distinguished military service and contributions to Russian exploration in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
