Early Life and Career

Pyotr Shafirov was born into the family of a deacon. In 1698, he accompanied Andrey Matveyev on his mission to Holland. Soon after, Shafirov became a trusted companion of Peter the Great, accompanying him on his travels throughout Europe.

Diplomatic Missions

In 1707, Peter I entrusted Shafirov with a critical mission: to persuade France to mediate between Russia and Sweden in the negotiations for peace. However, the French Foreign Minister, de Torcy, declined to intervene, and the talks in Paris proved fruitless.

Post-Negotiating Roles

From 1708 onwards, Shafirov served as Secretary of the Embassy Chancery. In 1719, he was appointed Secretary-Assessor of the College of Foreign Affairs. In 1723, he played a key role in coordinating the coronations of Catherine I, Peter II, and Anna Ivanovna.

Later Life and Legacy

Pyotr Shafirov's contributions to the Russian Empire were extensive. He was a skilled diplomat and a trusted advisor to Peter the Great. His work helped shape Russia's foreign policy during a transformative era. As a central figure in the administration of the early 18th century, Shafirov left an enduring legacy in Russian history.
