Early Life and Background
Petr Lapshev was born into a peasant family in the village of Musorka. After completing his schooling, he worked on the local collective farm. Due to his skills as an experienced tractor operator, Lapshev was initially granted a deferment from military service.
Service During World War II
In December 1942, Lapshev was deployed to the front lines as a gunner in the 1326th Light Artillery Regiment. He quickly distinguished himself in combat.
Liberation of Smolensk
During the battle for Smolensk, Lapshev and his crew stealthily maneuvered their artillery piece through a drainage tunnel beneath enemy railway tracks. Inside the enemy's rear, they opened fire in coordination with the main artillery barrage.
Heroic Defense
In another fierce engagement, Lapshev took command of his artillery crew and covered the retreat of Soviet troops for two days. Despite facing heavy opposition, they destroyed two German tanks (including a "Tiger II") and an armored car.
Escape and Return
After exhausting their ammunition, Lapshev and his crew fought off the enemy with small arms and grenades. They eventually retreated, dragging their artillery piece with them. They successfully crossed a river and made their way back to safety, despite facing injury and the initial assumption that their unit had perished.
Post-War Life and Legacy
Following the war, Lapshev settled in Kuibyshev, where he worked as a watchmaker. Streets in Toliatti and his hometown of Musorka bear his name in recognition of his heroism.
