Early Life and Education
Petra Karin Lehmann was born in Günzburg, Bavaria, Germany. Her father abandoned the family when she was seven years old, leaving her mother to work full-time. Petra was raised primarily by her grandmother.
In 1960, her mother remarried an American officer, John E. Kelly, and the family moved to the United States. From 1966 to 1970, Kelly studied political science and international relations at American University in Washington, D.C.
Political Activism
Influenced by Martin Luther King Jr., Kelly became involved in the Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey presidential campaigns in 1968. In 1979, she co-founded the Green Party, a political party dedicated to environmental protection and peace activism.
Recognition and Bundestag
Kelly's work earned her the "Right Livelihood Award" in 1982. In 1983, she was elected to the German Bundestag, serving as a member of the Green Party.
Tragic Demise
In 1992, Kelly was tragically murdered by her partner, Gert Bastian, who subsequently killed himself. Her assassination shocked the nation and cast a shadow over her legacy as a peaceful and influential political figure.
