Early Life and Education
Vasyl Ono penko was born on April 10, 1949, in the village of Bolshiye Krushintsy, Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. After graduating from the Lviv Electrotechnical College of Communications in 1969, he pursued a law degree at the Kharkiv Law Institute, which he completed in 1975.
Judicial Career
Ono penko began his judicial career in 1976 as a judge in the Lityn District Court. He later rose to become the head of the Lityn District Court. From 1981 to 1985, he served as deputy head of the Chernivtsi Oblast Court. Subsequently, he became a judge on the civil board of the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR.
Minister of Justice and Political Career
In 1991, Ono penko was appointed deputy minister of justice of the Ukrainian SSR. In November of the same year, he became the minister of justice of the Ukrainian SSR (later Ukraine). He held this position until August 1995, when he resigned in protest against the mishandling of the investigation into the controversial burial of Patriarch Volodymyr on Sofia Square in Kyiv.
Ono penko founded the Human Rights Party in 1994. In 1995, it merged with several other social democratic parties to form the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (later the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (United)). He became the leader of this new political force.
Parliamentary and Presidential Candidacy
Ono penko was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) in 1998 as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (United). However, he was removed as the party's chairman in 1998 due to conflicts with other members. He subsequently founded the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party (USDP) and served as its chairman. In 1999, he ran for president but finished eighth out of thirteen candidates.
Supreme Court Justice and Chairman
Ono penko became a member of the High Council of Justice of Ukraine in 2000. He was elected as a judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in 2002 but did not participate in its work until September 2006 due to his parliamentary duties.
In 2006, Ono penko was elected chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine. He resigned from his parliamentary seat to focus on his duties as chairman. He also stepped down as head of the USDP.
