Biography of Phil Hartman
Phil Hartman was an American actor, comedian, writer, and artist of Canadian descent. He was born on September 24, 1948, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Hartman was the fourth of eight children in a Catholic family and often felt that he received less attention compared to his older and younger siblings, leading him to search for love and attention throughout his life. When he was 10 years old, his family moved to the United States, although Hartman only obtained American citizenship in 1990.
Education and Career
After graduating from high school, Hartman enrolled in Santa Monica City College to study art. However, his passion for rock music led him to drop out in 1969. He returned to his studies three years later at California State University, Northridge, where he pursued a degree in graphic arts. During his time in college, Hartman started his own business, designing over 40 album covers for various bands and creating the logo for the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash.
In 1975, Hartman joined the comedy improvisation group "The Groundlings," where he met artist Paul Reubens, who later became famous for his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman contributed to the development of the Pee-wee character and portrayed Captain Carl in "The Pee-wee Herman Show." He continued playing the role when the characters were featured in a children's television program. Hartman's talent for voice acting also led him to lend his voice to various animated shows, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Challenge of the GoBots," "Fantastic Max," "TaleSpin," "DuckTales," and "Darkwing Duck."
Hartman achieved national fame when he joined the cast of the popular music and comedy show "Saturday Night Live" in 1985. Over the course of 10 years, he appeared in 152 episodes and created numerous comedic characters, including Frank Sinatra, Ronald Reagan, Barbara Bush, Phil Donahue, and Bill Clinton. From 1995 to 1998, Hartman starred in the sitcom "NewsRadio."
Personal Life and Tragic Death
Hartman was married three times. His first two marriages ended in divorce, and in 1987, he married former model Brynn Omdahl, who aspired to become an actress. They met on a blind date a year before their wedding. Brynn gave birth to two children, Sean and Birgen Hartman. The couple faced certain problems, with Brynn struggling with jealousy over her husband's success and turning to alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism. However, neither side wanted to end their marriage, and Hartman even considered giving up his career to save their relationship. He attempted to find suitable roles for his wife, but she increasingly found herself in rehabilitation clinics.
On the evening of May 27, 1998, Brynn Hartman engaged in an argument with her husband, who threatened to leave her if she resumed using drugs. While he slept, Brynn took a pistol and shot Phil three times, twice in the head. She was intoxicated and had recently taken cocaine. Brynn confessed the crime to her friend Ron Douglas, who then called the police. The authorities removed the children from the house, and Brynn locked herself in a bedroom and committed suicide by shooting herself. The tragic and senseless death of the talented Phil Hartman shocked his colleagues and friends.
