Sherman Charles "Charlie" Ruggles was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 8, 1886. Initially pursuing a career in medicine, Ruggles abandoned his medical studies in favor of acting. He made his stage debut in 1905 and went on to Broadway, appearing in "Help Wanted" (produced by Oliver Morosco) in February 1914.
