Biography of Phil Keaggy

Early Life

Phil Keaggy is an American musician, guitarist, and author of over 50 albums. He was born Philip Tyler Keaggy in 1951 in Youngstown, Ohio. He grew up on a farm in Hubbard, Ohio, where he lost a finger at the age of 4 while playing with a water pump. Music always filled the Keaggy household, and as a child, Phil was initially interested in drums. However, on his 10th birthday, instead of drums, his father gave him a brand new "Sears Silvertone" guitar. Although initially disappointed, Phil eventually learned how to play and went on to achieve great success with the guitar.

Early Career

In the mid-1960s, Keaggy was a member of the garage band "Squires," which later changed its name to "The New Hudson Exit." In 1968, he became a member of the band "Glass Harp." The group had moderate success, constantly performing concerts and recording albums. However, Keaggy later described this period as somewhat dark. At the age of 18, he had developed a drug addiction, believing that drugs enhanced his musical talent. Looking back on his old recordings, Keaggy found them to be terrible under the influence of drugs.

Transformation and Success

In 1970, Keaggy's mother was involved in a serious car accident and passed away. This event deeply affected him, and within a week, under the influence of his sister, he became a devout Christian. Surprisingly, his music did not suffer; on the contrary, all of his major successes came after his spiritual transformation. In 1973, Keaggy released his first solo album, "What a Day," followed by "Love Broke Thru" in 1976. Since then, Keaggy has recorded over 50 official albums, many of which feature Christian music. He is renowned as one of the world's greatest guitarists and has won numerous awards, including the "Dove Award" for his Christian music. He has also been recognized by readers of "Guitar Player Magazine" for his famous fingerpicking style and memorable melodies.
