After serving in the United States Navy, Crosby worked as a reliability engineer at Bendix Corporation and later as a quality manager at Martin Company. Realizing that the concept of inevitable errors was too costly, he developed the concept of "zero defects" in 1961. In 1965, he became the director of quality at ITT Corporation and in 1968, the vice president of ITT, responsible for quality management in five hundred companies around the world. It was during this time that he developed his "Principles of Quality Management."

In 1979, after publishing "Quality Is Free," Crosby founded the Philip Crosby Associates and trained thousands of senior executives and managers through the "Quality College." In 1985, the association became the first publicly accessible consulting firm in the United States. He retired in 1991 but continues to write, conduct seminars, and deliver lectures.

Crosby has authored the following books: "Cutting the Cost of Quality" (1966, 1987), "The Art of Getting Your Own Sweet Way" (1972, 1981), "Quality Is Free" (1979), "Quality Without Tears" (1984), "Running Things" (1986), "The Eternally Successful Organization" (1988), "Let's Talk Quality" (1989), "Leading: The Art of Becoming an Executive" (1990), "Completeness" (1993), "Quality Is Still Free" (1995), and "The Absolutes of Leadership" (1996).

Philip Crosby is recognized worldwide as the person who showed the United States how to define and implement quality. He and his wife currently reside in Altamonte Springs, Florida, and Highlands, North Carolina.
