After the war, Lurie's company constructed major shopping centers in suburban Chicago. He then transitioned to building commercial real estate in Chicago and Denver, with Water Tower Place being one of his most notable projects.

Lurie was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party. He served as president of the World Jewish Congress from 1977 to 1979. In the Carter administration (1980-1981), he held the position of Secretary of Commerce and was known for advocating for strong ties with Israel.
