Early Life and Education
Born into Italian aristocracy as the son of an Austrian imperial advisor, Louis-Pierre de Paulucci received his education at a Jesuit College.
Military Career in Italy and Austria
In 1793, Paulucci joined the army of Piedmont. After Piedmont's annexation by France, he served in the French army. Following a successful anti-French plot, he fled to Austria, becoming a chamberlain at the imperial court. As part of the Austrian army, he fought against France.
Service in the Russian Army
In 1801, Paulucci joined the army of the Kingdom of Italy as a colonel. In 1806, he resigned and transferred to the French General Staff. In 1807, he was recruited into the Russian army as a colonel, serving as an adjutant to General Ivan I. Michelson.
Campaigns and Honors
Paulucci participated in the Russo-Turkish War (1806-1812), serving as chief of staff of the 8th Infantry Division. As chief of staff of the detached Georgian Corps, he distinguished himself in 1810 at the Battle of Akhaltsikhe, earning a promotion to general-lieutenant. For subduing Dagestan, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 3rd degree.
Role in the Napoleonic Wars
During the Отечественной войны of 1812, Paulucci was appointed chief of staff of the 3rd Western Army, then the 1st Western Army. Removed from the army due to illness, he was later appointed Riga military governor and commander of a separate corps. He directed battles on the Riga front and negotiated with Prussian general Yorck, leading to the signing of the Tauroggen Convention.
Post-War Career
In 1819, Paulucci became governor-general of Livonia and Courland, a post he held until 1829. He retired from the Russian army and returned to Italy, where he served in the Sardinian army and held several high-ranking positions.
