Early Life and Military Service
Ivan Ivanovich Karpezo was born in the village of Kugalevka, Vilensk Governorate (present-day Belarus) in 1896. Drafted into the Imperial Russian Army in 1915, he fought as a private in World War I on the Southwestern Front. Wounded in 1917, he was demobilized later that year.
Revolutionary and Civil War
In December 1918, Karpezo joined the Red Army and the Bolshevik Party the following year. He served in various roles, including as a Red Army member, inspector of the Southeastern Railway, and commissar of several units. From 1920, he fought as a commissar in the 25th Chapayev Rifle Division, taking part in the fierce battles against Polish forces in Ukraine.
Interwar Period
After the war, Karpezo held several command positions within the Red Army. He commanded a cavalry regiment from 1921 to 1924 and attended the Leningrad Higher Cavalry School in 1924. In 1928, he was appointed commander of the 19th Cavalry Regiment. Subsequently, he held various staff and instructional positions, including as the head of the Tambov Cavalry School from 1940.
World War II
In March 1941, Karpezo was appointed commander of the newly formed 15th Mechanized Corps. On the eve of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, his corps was incompletely formed and poorly equipped.
Despite these challenges, Karpezo and his corps fought valiantly in the opening battles of the war. However, the 15th Mechanized Corps suffered heavy losses and was eventually encircled and defeated. Karpezo himself was captured by German forces in September 1941.
Post-War Career
After being repatriated at the end of the war in 1945, Karpezo held various advisory and administrative positions within the Soviet Army. He retired from military service in 1951 and passed away in 1979.
