Philippe Alliot: A French Formula 1 Driver
Early Career: Formula Renault and Formula 3Philippe Alliot began his racing career in the Formula Renault series in 1976 and 1977. In 1978, he won the championship title with the BP Racing team. He subsequently moved to the French Formula 3 series, finishing third in his first race in 1980.
Formula 1 Debut and Challenging Years
Alliot made his Formula 1 debut with the RAM Racing team in 1984, but faced limited success, finishing in the points only three times. In 1986, he joined Ligier after Jacques Laffite was injured in the British Grand Prix. He scored his first point in the Mexican Grand Prix that year.
Move to Larrousse and Return to Ligier
Alliot moved to the Larrousse team in 1987 but returned to Ligier in 1990. He had modest results, with his highest finish being fifth at the 1990 British Grand Prix.
Successful Stint in Sports Car Racing
Alliot left Formula 1 in the early 1990s and enjoyed success in sports car racing with Peugeot, under the management of Jean Todt.
Return to Formula 1 and Retirement
Alliot briefly returned to Formula 1 with Larrousse in 1993 and became a test driver for McLaren in 1994. He ultimately retired from the sport at the end of the 1994 season.
Post-Formula 1 Career
After retiring from Formula 1, Alliot pursued a career in politics, became a television commentator, and participated in winter rallies and the Paris-Dakar Rally.
