Early Life and Career
Philipse van Almonde was a Dutch admiral who served under the tutelage of the renowned Michiel de Ruyter. During the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars, Almonde commanded ships in the Dutch fleet.
Rise Through the Ranks
In 1673, Almonde was promoted to Rear Admiral. In 1674, he joined de Ruyter on an expedition to the West Indies. In 1676, he commanded a squadron in the Battle of Bornholm against the Swedish fleet.
Mediterranean Command
After de Ruyter's death, Almonde took command of a squadron in the Mediterranean Sea. During the Grand Alliance War and War of the Spanish Succession, he led Dutch squadrons as part of the allied fleet.
Key Role in Allied Success
Almonde's skill and energy surpassed that of the English admirals he served under (Russell, Rooke, and Shovel). He provided them with valuable advice and played a critical role in the success of numerous allied naval operations.
Retirement and Final Days
Following the death of King William III of Orange, relations between England and the Dutch deteriorated. Almonde faced challenges from his English superiors. In 1706, he resigned his command rather than accept being placed under a younger English admiral.
