Early Life and Education
Felicia Rashad was born on June 19, 1948, in Harris County, Texas. Her father, Andrew Wilson Rashad, was an African-American minister and physician of Cherokee descent. Her mother, Vivian Ayers Rashad, was an accomplished poet and playwright. As a young child, Felicia and her family moved to Mexico, where she became fluent in both English and Spanish. Upon graduating from high school, she attended Harvard University, where she majored in dramatic arts and joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
Broadway and Music Career
Felicia Rashad's acting debut came on the Broadway stage. She quickly established herself as a talented actress, appearing in a variety of productions. In parallel with her theater work, she pursued a solo music career, releasing her debut album, "Josephine Superstar," in 1978.
Television Success
In 1983, Rashad landed a major role in the soap opera "One Life to Live." Her breakout performance came as Claire Huxtable in the groundbreaking sitcom "The Cosby Show" (1984-1992). This iconic role earned her critical acclaim and numerous accolades.
Personal Life
Felicia Rashad has been married three times. Her first marriage to dentist William Bowles Jr. in 1972 ended in divorce in 1975. She remarried in 1978 to actor Victor Willis, but they divorced in 1980. In December 1985, she married sports commentator Ahmad Rashad, and they remain together today.
