Born on August 5, 1964, in Amsterdam, Douwes initially aspired to be a nurse for children with intellectual disabilities. A chance encounter at a disco changed her aspirations, igniting a passion for dance. She enrolled in the Brooking School of Ballet in London despite having no formal dance training.

In 1986, Douwes landed her first small role in the German-language production of "Little Shop of Horrors." A year later, she joined the cast of "Cats" in Amsterdam, touring with the show in Russia in 1988. Her breakthrough came in 1992 when she was cast as the title role in the world premiere of "Elisabeth" in Vienna.
