Early Life and EducationWhitner Nutting Bissell was born in New York City on October 29, 1909. The son of a renowned surgeon, he grew up in an affluent environment. Bissell received his early education at prestigious private schools before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied English and Drama.
Broadway Debut and Theater Success
While still in college, Bissell joined the Civic Repertory Company in New York City. He made his Broadway debut at the age of 23 and went on to appear in 15 productions, including "Alice in Wonderland," "Hamlet," and "Two On An Island." Bissell's stage presence and versatility earned him widespread recognition.
Transition to Film and Iconic Roles
In 1940, Bissell transitioned to the silver screen with a role in "The Sea Hawk." His distinctive appearance, marked by a chiseled face, silvery hair, and gentle voice, made him a natural fit for cinematic characters. Bissell portrayed a wide range of roles, from businessmen and military officers to historical figures and villains.
Horror and Sci-Fi Classics
Bissell became a fixture in horror and sci-fi films of the 1950s. He played Dr. Brandon in "I Was a Teenage Werewolf," Professor Frankenstein in "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein," and Dr. Tompson in the classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon." These roles cemented his status as a beloved cult figure.

In his later years, Bissell predominantly worked in television, appearing in numerous series. His final role was as Mr. Hobson in an episode of "Falcon Crest" in 1984. He served on the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild and was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Personal Life and Legacy
Bissell was married three times. He had two daughters, Kathy and Victoria, with his first wife, actress Adrienne Marden. After divorcing Marden, he married Dilys Mary Shan Jukes in 1954, who gave birth to their daughter, Amanda. His third wife, British actress Jennifer Raine, passed away in 1993. Bissell himself died in 1996 from Parkinson's disease. Remembered for his remarkable character portrayals and memorable screen presence, Whitner Bissell remains an iconic figure in American cinema.
