Pierre Garnier de Laboissière
Early Life and EducationPierre Garnier de Laboissière, Count, was born on March 11, 1755, in Chassenec, Charente, France. He belonged to a noble family and received his education at the Royal Military School in Paris.
Military Career
Early ServiceLaboissière began his military service on June 1, 1772, as a sub-lieutenant in the Custine Dragoon Regiment. He retired on June 16, 1776, but rejoined the regiment on June 15, 1777.
The French Revolutionary Wars
During the French Revolutionary Wars, Laboissière played a significant role. He was promoted to captain in the Montmorency Dragoon Regiment on April 28, 1788, but was dismissed from service on March 19, 1791. On September 15 of the same year, he re-entered the army as a captain in the 2nd Horse-Chasseur Regiment.
Campaigns and Promotions
Laboissière fought with the Army of the Rhine from 1792 to 1794. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 20, 1792, and captured 300 prisoners in the battle of Speyer on September 30, 1792. He was made commander of the 2nd Horse-Chasseur Brigade on December 1, 1792, and promoted to brigadier general on October 7, 1792.
On July 2, 1794, Laboissière became commander of the cavalry brigade of the 2nd division under General Louis Saint-Cyr. He fought on the Rhine until he was captured by Prussian troops on July 13, 1794. Exchanged in April 1795, he returned to France.
Further Service and Commands
Laboissière held various commands after his return. He led a brigade in the Army of the Rhine and Moselle from June 13, 1795, and served in the vanguard of the army in December 1795. From January 14, 1797, he commanded the cavalry of the 6th division of the Army of the Rhine, and later the division of General Saint-Suzanne from April 20.
He became commander of the cavalry of the Army of Germany on September 24, 1797, and of the Army of England on January 12, 1798. From August 16, 1798, he commanded the cavalry of the division under General Férin in the Army of Mainz. On February 25, 1799, he became commander of the cavalry of the Army of Italy, where he distinguished himself at the Battle of Novi.
Napoleonic Wars
Laboissière continued to serve under Napoleon Bonaparte. He commanded the cavalry of the Army of Italy under General André Masséna from June 23, 1800, and the Reserve Army from August 9. He commanded the 4th cavalry division from September 8, 1800.
From 1800 to 1801, Laboissière briefly held no assignment, but on November 23, 1801, he was appointed general inspector of cavalry. However, he returned to his previous post as general inspector of infantry on February 27, 1802.
Later Life
On August 25, 1803, Laboissière was elected to the Senate, representing the department of Charente. He received the title of камергер of the Imperial Court on February 1, 1805. On March 20, 1807, he was given the honorary position of commander of the 4th legion of the National Guard in Versailles.
On March 1, 1809, Laboissière was appointed commander of the cavalry of Marshal Massena's corps. However, due to illness, he was unable to assume his duties and was replaced by General Marulaz on March 31. Laboissière died in Paris on April 14, 1809.
