Path to Priesthood and Mission
Pierre Henri Doric was ordained into the priesthood on May 31, 1864, and was later assigned to the Paris Foreign Missions Society, a Catholic missionary organization.
Arrival in Korea and Pastoral Work
In 1864, Doric accompanied Bishop Siméon-François Berneux, who had been appointed as Bishop of Korea. They arrived in the country to provide pastoral care and spread Catholicism. Doric diligently studied Korean to facilitate his interactions.
Persecution and Martyrdom
During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Catholic missionaries in Korea faced intense persecution. Missionaries like Doric were forced to work underground. On March 7, 1866, Doric and Bishop Berneux were arrested.
Execution and Legacy
Doric was executed in Seoul, facing his death with unwavering faith. He became a martyr for the Catholic Church.
Sainthood
On May 6, 1984, Doric was officially recognized as a saint by Pope John Paul II, along with 103 other Korean martyrs. His feast day is celebrated on September 20.
