Étienne Pierre de Lacretelle

Early Life and Education

Étienne Pierre de Lacretelle was born in Paris on May 3, 1766. He studied law and began his legal career in 1786.

Political Career

In 1791, Lacretelle was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly. After the fall of the monarchy, he served as a member of the Legislative Corps from 1801. During the Bourbon Restoration, he led opposition newspapers, including "Nouveau Mercure" and "Minerve."

Literary Contributions

Lacretelle is best known for his written works, which focused on legal, philosophical, and social issues. His most prominent publications include:

- "Mêlanges de jurisprudence et de philosophie etc." (1779)

- "Discours sur le préjugé des peines infamantes" (1784)

- "De l'établissement des connaissances humaines et de l'instruction publique etc." (1791)

Literary Works

In addition to his non-fiction writings, Lacretelle also wrote a dramatized novel, "Charles Artaud Malherbe ou le fils naturel," in which he paid tribute to the philosopher Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert.

Membership in the Académie Française

Lacretelle was elected to the Académie Française in 1818. He held the position of perpetual secretary from 1830 until his death on December 5, 1855. Throughout his life, Lacretelle made significant contributions to French legal, political, and literary discourse.
