Biography of Piers Anthony
Piers Anthony is an American writer of English descent. His books primarily belong to the fantasy genre, with some works also falling into the category of science fiction. His most famous work is the "Xanth" series, which consists of over 30 books. Piers Anthony has published books "for all the letters of the alphabet," from Anthonology to Zombie Lover, totaling over a hundred works.
Early Life and Education
Piers Anthony was born in Oxford, England, into a Quaker family. His father was an American, and in 1939, amidst the Spanish Civil War, his parents moved to Spain, taking their son with them. In Spain, they were involved in charitable activities. However, when Franco came to power, Anthony's father was deemed a suspicious foreigner and was soon expelled from the country. The Anthony family decided to relocate to the United States, arriving in 1940.
Early Career and Writing
In 1956, Piers Anthony graduated from college and married his classmate Carol Ann Marble. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a job, he enlisted in the army, where he served until 1959. While serving in the army in 1958, he obtained American citizenship. Following his military service, he worked as a teacher in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a short period before dedicating himself entirely to writing.
Writing Success and Personal Life
In 1963, Piers Anthony had his first published story, "Possible to Rue." In 1967, his first novel, "Chthon," was published. His novella "Sos the Rope" won first prize in a literary competition. Initially, Anthony's works were in the science fiction genre, but he soon transitioned almost entirely to fantasy.
In 1977, the first novel in the "Xanth" series, "A Spell for Chameleon," was released. The tremendous success of the novel prompted the author to continue the series. Currently, Piers Anthony resides on his ranch in Florida with his wife. They have two daughters and a granddaughter.
