Biography of Pietro Badoglio

Early Life and Military Career

Pietro Badoglio was born on September 28, 1871, in Grazzano-Monferrato, Piedmont. He graduated from the military academy in Turin and served in the military in East Africa and Libya. During World War I, he became a general and eventually the Supreme Commander of the Italian Armed Forces. In 1924, he was appointed as Ambassador to Brazil by Mussolini, and in 1925, he became the Chief of the General Staff. From 1928 to 1933, he served as the Governor-General of Libya. In 1935, he led the Italian forces in the Italo-Ethiopian War, capturing Addis Ababa in May 1936 and completing the conquest of Ethiopia.

Concerns and Resignation

Badoglio became increasingly concerned with Italy's entry into World War II on June 11, 1940. Initially, he assumed command of the armed forces, but he resigned in December 1940. Badoglio supported those who intended to overthrow the dictator and seek peace. On July 25, 1943, after Mussolini's arrest by King Victor Emmanuel III, Badoglio became the Prime Minister. In September 1943, as Germany occupied Italy, he and the government relocated to the south of the country behind the front line in Brindisi. On October 13, 1943, the Badoglio government declared war on Germany, and simultaneously, the Allies recognized Italy as a "co-belligerent" nation. On June 10, 1944, six days after the liberation of Rome from the Nazis, Badoglio resigned from his position as Prime Minister.

Later Life and Death

Pietro Badoglio passed away on October 31, 1956, in Grazzano-Monferrato.
