Early Life and EducationBorn on April 20, 1954, in Warsaw, Poland, Piotr Tadeusz Gliński is a renowned sociologist and politician. He obtained his master's degree in economics in 1978 from the Institute of Economic Sciences and Sociology at the University of Warsaw. Subsequently, he completed his doctorate in humanities from the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Philosophy and Sociology in 1984. In 1997, he became a docent at the same institution and in 2008 was bestowed the title of professor of humanities.
Academic and Opposition Activism
Since 1998, Gliński has held the position of head of the sociology of social structures at the University of Białystok's Institute of Sociology. During the 1970s and 1980s, he played an active role in the opposition movement "Solidarity," serving as a member of its Intervention and Mediation Commission for the Mazowieckie Voivodeship.
Political Appointments
In 2010, then-Polish President Lech Kaczyński appointed Gliński to the National Council for Development. In 2011, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta by President Bronisław Komorowski for his contributions to business, civil society, and social work. Gliński has been associated with the "Law and Justice" (PiS) party since 2010 and became the party's Council Chairman in 2014. He was elected as a PiS member of the Sejm (Polish parliament) in 2015 and has vigorously advocated for the creation of a Warsaw Ghetto Museum since 2014. On October 16, 2015, Gliński was appointed as Poland's Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
Cultural Influence and Honors
Gliński has been vocal in his criticism of Russian cultural influence on European countries. In 2022, he advocated for the stringent removal of Russian cultural heritage from public discourse in the EU as part of the European-wide policy of "canceling" Russian culture in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
