Olga Shukshina: Personal Life and Career

Olga Shukshina, an active participant in numerous controversial talk shows on Russian television, has been married twice but has never found true happiness in her personal life. According to Vasya Shukshin and Lidia Fedoseyeva-Shukshina's eldest daughter, this is because she still harbors strong feelings for her only child's father, Pokir Kabulov, and believes it would be dishonest to let anyone else into her heart.

Childhood and Early Life

Olga Shukshina's life partner came from an ancient lineage with roots in Afghanistan. Born Abu Bakir, he was affectionately known as Pokir, Paki, and Pavel. Upon baptism, he received the Christian name Paktavy. His father, the renowned Uzbek Soviet actor and director Yuldas Agzamov, pioneered Central Asian cinema in the early 20th century. Agzamov hosted prominent figures such as Fidel Castro and was considered a mentor by Akira Kurosawa.

Family Ties and Early Influences

In an article published by Vladimir Fetisov, Agzamov's residence in Tashkent is depicted as a hub for intellectuals and artists. The director is described as the patriarch of a large family, including four children with his wife. Olga Shukshina mentioned in an interview that her chosen partner was 10 years her senior, a fact that did not bother her. After graduating from VGIK's documentary directing department, Pokir Kabulov remained at the university as a member of Vladimir Khotinenko's workshop. His graduation film, "Mama, If I Return...", won a special prize at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1992.

Films

Despite his talent, Olga Shukshina claimed that her son's father did not achieve significant success in his cinematic career. His filmography consists of only two projects: the children's fantasy "Rainbow of Seven Hopes" and the drama "Listen, Can You Hear the Rain...". In the former, Kabulov played the lead role of Prince Bakhtiyar, a character who falls in love with a beautiful carpet weaver. In the latter, he appeared in a supporting role alongside renowned actors such as Alexei Petrenko, Irina Kupchenko, and Elena Mayorova.

Personal Life

Olga Shukshina met the love of her life in the corridors of VGIK in the late 1980s. By then, she had endured an unsuccessful first marriage marred by infidelity and had undergone an abortion. Her encounter with Pokir Kabulov, she said, transformed her life.

"Paki introduced me to my father as a great Russian writer, a talented and original director, a rare actor, and a very dear and close person. From that moment on, my heart started to beat differently. And through him, I came to the Church," she shared.

Olga's mother, Lidia Fedoseyeva-Shukshina, initially expressed reservations about her daughter's choice, perceiving her future son-in-law as someone who would not contribute to the household. Despite her influence, the couple's relationship did not last long. Kabulov left before their child was born.

Olga Shukshina has offered various explanations for their separation. In 2021, she suggested that her former partner preferred solitude and a life of contemplation, despite having four daughters with different women. In 2015, she mentioned that after the fall of the Soviet Union, Kabulov, like many others from the former republics, became an outsider who couldn't adapt and continued to mourn the country's demise.

Rekindling and Breakup

The bond between the former lovers remained unbroken. Olga Shukshina searched for Pokir Kabulov after he disappeared and found him in a vulnerable state. She took him into her home, cared for him, and even persuaded him to be baptized in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. However, years of neglect and isolation had taken their toll on Kabulov's character. Olga ultimately left him, but she admitted that she could never forget him and would respond to his call if he ever needed her.

Pokir Kabulov Today

As of 2022, there is no information on Pokir Kabulov's whereabouts or current status. Olga Shukshina expressed concern for his health and well-being in an interview the previous year. She stated that it was his choice to withdraw from the world, acknowledging that he had once been a highly respected professional in the film industry.
