Biography of Polina Astakhova

Polina Grigorievna Astakhova was born on October 30, 1936, in Zaporizhia, Ukrainian SSR. She was a Soviet athlete in the sport of gymnastics and was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. Polina Astakhova had an impressive list of achievements throughout her career.

Olympic Success

Astakhova was a three-time Olympic champion, winning gold medals in the team competition in 1956, 1960, and 1964. She also won gold medals in the parallel bars in 1960 and 1964. In addition, she won a silver medal in the floor exercise in 1960 and 1964, and a bronze medal in the all-around competition in 1960 and 1964. In the 1956 Olympics, she also won a bronze medal in the group floor exercise.

World Championships and European Championships

Early Career

In order to make good use of her time, she applied to a sports college offering a gymnastics program. On the day she entered the college, a gymnastics championship was being held, and that's how she met her first and only coach, Vladimir Alexandrovich Smirnov.
