Biography of Polina Rostova
Early Life and EducationPolina Rostova, a Russian singer who achieved the peak of her popularity in the early 2000s, was born on December 20, 1980, in Zhukovsky, Moscow Oblast, in a family of musicians. Her mother worked as an engineer at the Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute. From an early age, Polina's parents fostered her interest in music. When she was five years old, she was enrolled in the choir school "Polyot" (Flight), where she studied for ten years and performed with the choir in several European countries. She won the regional Olympiad in solfeggio. After finishing school, she entered the Octubre Revolution Music School (Conductor and Choir Faculty). Besides music, she also engaged in ballroom dancing, tennis, and had a passion for scooter riding and flying sports planes.
Solo Career
Polina Rostova's solo career started almost by accident. One autumn day in the late 1990s, she was walking on Arbat street in Moscow when she saw a karaoke bar and decided to sing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" there. Nearby, musicians from the recording studio "Bratya Grimm" (The Brothers Grimm), Arthur A'Kim and J. Moss, noticed her performance and gave her their studio's phone number. Initially, Rostova didn't take it seriously and only contacted the musicians six months later. Her first recorded song was "Po Krayu Dozhdya" (On the Edge of Rain), which instantly brought her great success and entered the competition "Song of the Year 99". Rostova recalls, "I remember this first radio broadcast when I listened and waited for it to start playing. When I heard it, the stars on the ceiling in my apartment flew. Instead of listening and enjoying it, I started calling everyone and shouting: My song, my song... After that, it became clear that we would do something more." Other popular songs of that time were "Padala Zvezda" (Falling Star), "Neschastlivaya" (Unhappy), and "Pozdno" (Late). In 2000, her debut album "Po Krayu Dozhdya" was released under the label "ARS-Records". Rostova's songs reached high positions in the charts, and she became a multiple laureate of "Song of the Year" and "Golden Gramophone" awards, as well as a participant in Alla Pugacheva's "Christmas Meetings". She discontinued her studies at the college and transferred to the Gnessin State Musical College, majoring in pop vocal, graduating in 2002. In 2002, Rostova participated in the international competition "New Wave" in Jurmala. She considered her performance at the competition unsuccessful due to voice problems caused by the climate. For a whole year after Jurmala, she couldn't sing. Furthermore, she had some disagreements with the producers. All these events led to Rostova disappearing from the stage for many years. As of 2004, it was reported that she had signed a contract with the label REAL Records, produced by Iosif Prigozhin, and had recorded her second studio album. However, this album was never released.
Life Beyond Music
Stepping away from music, Rostova pursued aikido and, starting from 2008, performed in musicals in Moscow theaters, playing leading roles in well-known musicals such as "Wicked," "Francois Villon," and "I Choose Life." In 2012, after a long hiatus, she recorded the song "Eto Tolko Slova" (These Are Only Words) with Dmitry Moss, the co-author of her debut album. Since 2016, she has returned to active music activity, releasing two solo albums, "Phantoms of Love" (2018) and "In the Zone of Love" (2020). In addition, as of 2022, she has released a dozen singles, with the most successful ones being "Dura Schastlivaya" (Happy Fool), "Zhara" (Heat), "Stalnye Glaza" (Steel Eyes), "Eto Nasha Lyubov" (This is Our Love), and others. Almost all of Polina Rostova's new material is released not only as a vocalist but also as a composer, with lyrics written by her husband Ivan Frolov. Additionally, Rostova continued her collaboration with Dmitry Moss, and in 2018, she recorded the song "Kogda Lyubov' Naydёt Menya" (When Love Finds Me), which became the official soundtrack of the TV series "Prosto Roman" (Just a Novel), where her song "Phantoms of Love" from the album of the same name was also featured.
Personal Life
In the early 2000s, there were rumors of a romantic relationship between Polina Rostova and one of the members of the group Eiffel 65 ("One of the guys tried to court me, and someone photographed us together a couple of times"). At the "New Wave-2002" festival, she had a romance with Sergey Lazarev, a member of the group Smash!!. Later, she married Ivan Frolov, who became the author of the lyrics for her new songs, and they had a child.
