Polykarp Makhno: The Brother of a Legendary Rebel

Polykarp Makhno was born in 1867 to Eudokia Matveevna and Ivan Rodionovich Makhno, making him the first child of the family. While his younger brother, Nestor, would become famous for his role in the Ukrainian Revolution, Polykarp led a more domestic life.

Family and Settlement in Hulyaipole

Polykarp was a Ukrainian peasant who married Kharitina and had eight children of his own. He lived in the village of Hulyaipole, where he tended to his farm and stayed away from the makhnovshchina (Nestor's anarchist movement).

Brief Role as Commandant

Despite his detachment from his brother's political activities, Polykarp briefly served as the commandant of Hulyaipole. However, his time in this role was cut short.

Tragic Fate at the Hands of the White Cossacks

In February 1919, a detachment of White Cossacks raided Hulyaipole in search of Nestor. Misidentified as his brother, Polykarp was brutally beaten and interrogated in front of his family. After being tied up, he was taken to the outskirts of Hulyaipole and left unconscious in a ravine. The Cossacks also burned his house down. Polykarp succumbed to his injuries on the same day.

Nestor's Grief and Vengeance

Nestor was deeply affected by the loss of his older brother. Like their grandfather, Emeliyan, Polykarp had been killed as an indirect consequence of his own actions. At Polykarp's grave, Nestor vowed to avenge his brother's death.

Son's Service in Makhno's Army

Following Polykarp's death, his son joined Nestor's detachment, continuing the family's ties to the revolutionary movement.
