Biography of Porfiry Chanchibadze
Porfiry Chanchibadze was born on December 13, 1901, in the city of Makhardash, Georgia. He began his military service in 1921 and went on to achieve great success in his career.
Early Career
Chanchibadze graduated from the Georgian Combined Military School in 1922 and later attended courses to improve his command skills. He completed the "Shot" courses in 1940 and the academic courses at the Higher Military Academy in 1948.
From 1922 to 1932, he commanded a platoon and a company, and also served as an assistant to the chief of staff of a regiment. In 1932, Chanchibadze became a battalion commander and in 1937, he was appointed as the commander of a rifle regiment.
World War II
Chanchibadze entered the Great Patriotic War in this position and demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. In July 1941, he took command of a division and in November 1942, he became the commander of the 13th Guards Rifle Corps. From May 1944 onwards, he commanded the 72nd Rifle Corps and played a crucial role in the Eastern Front.
His troops fought in various major battles, including the Battle of Moscow, the Battle of Stalingrad, and the operations in Donbass, Melitopol, Crimea, Shaulai, Memel, and Eastern Prussia. For his skillful command, courage, and bravery displayed during the war, Chanchibadze was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Post-War Career
After the war, Chanchibadze served as the commander of the 11th Guards Rifle Corps from 1946 to 1947 and the 13th Guards Rifle Corps. From 1948 to 1950, he worked in the Ministry of Defense.
Chanchibadze was also a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, serving in the Second Convocation. He received numerous awards and decorations, including two Orders of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of Suvorov 1st and 2nd Class, Order of Kutuzov 2nd Class, Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky 2nd Class, Order of the Red Star, and several medals.
