Early Life and EducationPrentis Cobb Hale II was born on July 30, 1910, to a prominent San Francisco family. His father, Prentis Cobb Hale I, was the founder of the department store Hale Brothers & Co. Prentis II attended Lawrenceville Academy in New Jersey and later Stanford University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1933 and a law degree in 1936.
Family Life
Hale married Marialice Pat King in 1936. The couple had four children together. In 1969, Marialice committed suicide under tragic circumstances. Two years later, Hale married Denise Minnelli, a Hollywood socialite and ex-wife of director Vincente Minnelli.
Business Career
Following his father's death in 1936, Hale returned to San Francisco to join the family business. Starting as a stock clerk, he rose through the ranks and became president of Hale Brothers in 1948. The company later merged with Broadway Department Stores to form Broadway-Hale Stores Inc.
Community Involvement
Hale made significant contributions to San Francisco's cultural scene. He served as president of the San Francisco Opera and as a business leader for the San Francisco Symphony. He was also an avid sportsman, serving as president of the VIII Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California in 1960.
