Prince Eugen: A Royal Artist
Prince Eugen, the fourth and youngest son of King Oscar II of Sweden, was born on January 21, 1865. He was a man of many talents, but is best known as a painter, art collector, and patron.
Early Education and Art Training
Eugen received a private secondary education before studying painting under Wilhelm von Gegerfelt in Uppsala from 1885 to 1886. He then traveled to Paris, where he studied with Léon Bonnat, Alfred Roll, and Henri Gervex.
A Dedicated Landscape Painter
Upon returning to Sweden, Eugen dedicated himself to landscape painting, primarily in the style of Impressionism. His works often depicted the landscapes of Södermanland, Stockholm, Lake Mälaren, and other places he frequented, such as Tyresö, Erghorden, and Österlen.
Monumental Paintings and Art Patronage
In addition to his landscape paintings, Prince Eugen was also a skilled muralist. He created frescoes such as "City on the Water" in Stockholm City Hall, "White Night" and "Summer" in Norra Latin Grammar School, and the altar of Kiruna Church.
Waldemarsudde: A Legacy of Art
In 1899, Eugen purchased the park and palace of Waldemarsudde on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. In 1905, he built a modern-style residence on the estate, which he designed with architect Ferdinand Boberg.
Eugen bequeathed his home and art collection to the Swedish state. Today, Waldemarsudde is a museum showcasing Eugen's apartment and an extensive collection of Swedish art from the 19th and 20th centuries, including over 3,000 of Eugen's own paintings and drawings.
Accolades and Recognition
Eugen's works are displayed in leading art collections throughout Sweden, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. In 1945, on Eugen's 80th birthday, the Prince Eugen Medal was established to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts.
