Early Life and Education

Born in Malaysia, the poet and actor faced a traumatic childhood. At the age of 11, he suffered a severe illness that resulted in deafness. Despite the challenges, he completed his elementary education.

Literary Beginnings

In 1975, he relocated to Kuala Lumpur and worked in menial jobs, including as a restaurant dishwasher. Amidst these humble beginnings, he found solace in writing poetry, beginning in 1976. His works gained recognition in 1979 when they were published in the literary journal "Dewan Sastra."

Journalism and Critical Acclaim

In 1982, he joined the popular magazine "Mastika" as a journalist. His poetry collections, "Voice" (1982) and "The Nerve of My Sorrow" (1985), attracted critical acclaim. His socially conscious verse expressed solidarity with oppressed peoples, notably the Palestinians. His work was highly praised by influential writers such as Abdul Latiff Mohidin and Usman Awang, yet he remained politically detached.

Artistic Initiatives and Collaborations

He was instrumental in initiating the "Under the Lamppost" poetry readings at Kuala Lumpur's Bazaar Art in 1986. As a member of the "Sons of Nature" group of poets and artists, he participated in their activities and collaborations. He was also an active member of the writers' organization "PENA," frequently performing at their monthly poetry readings.

Film Career

Beyond his literary pursuits, he also appeared in six films, leaving a lasting mark on Malaysian cinema.

Legacy and Departure

On June 4, 2024, he passed away at his home in Hulu Kelang at the age of 66. His legacy lives on through his powerful and poignant poetry that continues to resonate with readers and fellow artists.
