Childhood and Education

Born on March 19, 1966, in Tianjin, Qin Gang embarked on his diplomatic path at a young age. In 1984, the ambitious 18-year-old enrolled in the School of International Relations at Peking University, a renowned institution that has produced numerous Chinese diplomats and ambassadors.

Early Career

After graduating in 1988, Qin Gang joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served in various low-level positions, including at the Department of Western European Affairs. In 1995, he was assigned to the Chinese embassy in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where he spent a decade honing his diplomatic skills and eventually rose to the level of head of mission.

Rise to Prominence

Qin Gang's impressive career trajectory continued in 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Press and Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry. His witty and candid responses to provocative questions earned him recognition in the media. In 2010, he became China's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, but returned to Beijing a year later to lead the Department of Information and Press.

Ambassador to the United States

In 2021, Qin Gang was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States. He engaged in numerous disputes with the US government, challenging NATO's designation of China as a major threat and criticizing the visit of Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs

In December 2022, Qin Gang reached the pinnacle of his diplomatic career by being elected Minister of Foreign Affairs. He pledged to anchor his work in China's wisdom, initiatives, and strength. In 2023, he became a member of the National People's Congress and a State Councilor and Vice Premier, setting another record as the youngest official to hold such high-level positions.

Foreign Policy Stances

Qin Gang's foreign policy approach emphasizes non-alignment with blocs, cooperation, and opposition to the creation of alliances against third parties. He has supported diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and has stressed the importance of constructive relations with both the United States and Russia.

Personal Life

Qin Gang is married to Lin Yan, and they have a son. His wife actively supports his professional endeavors, accompanying him on official duties such as hosting the International Tea Day celebration in the US embassy.
