Rachel Maddow: A Trailblazing Journalist and Liberal Commentator

Birth and Early Life

Rachel Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California, to Elaine Gosse and Robert Maddow. Her father was a former Air Force captain who became a lawyer, while her mother was a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada.

Education and Oxford Scholarship

Maddow graduated from Castro Valley High School and earned a degree in public policy from Stanford University in 1994. She received both a John Gardner and a Rhodes Scholarship, which allowed her to pursue graduate studies at Oxford University in 1995. She earned a DPhil in 2001, with a dissertation on HIV/AIDS and healthcare reform in British and American prisons.

Radio Career

Maddow began her radio hosting career at WRNX in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as a second host on "The Dave in the Morning Show." She then became the host of "The Big Breakfast" on WRSI in Northampton, Massachusetts, for two years.

Air America and "The Rachel Maddow Show"

In 2004, Maddow joined Air America and co-hosted "Unfiltered" with Chuck D and Lizz Winstead. After its cancellation in 2005, she launched "The Rachel Maddow Show," which became a two-hour program in 2008.

MSNBC and Political Commentary

In 2008, Maddow joined MSNBC as a political analyst and regularly appeared on "Race for the White House" and "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." She became a permanent host on MSNBC's prime-time lineup in September 2008.

Personal Life

Maddow lives in Manhattan, New York City, with her domestic partner, artist Susan Mikula. They met in 1999, despite Massachusetts recognizing same-sex marriage, Maddow and Mikula have chosen not to marry.
