Biography of Rachel Luttrell
Rachel Luttrell is a Canadian actress known for her role as Teyla Emmagan in the science-fiction series "Stargate Atlantis". She was born in Lushoto, Tanzania to an American father from Louisiana and a Tanzanian mother from the Shambala ethnic group. When she was five years old, her family immigrated to Canada and she grew up in Toronto.
Early Life and Musical Background
Luttrell comes from a very musical family. Her father, a former member of the Mendelssohn Choir in Toronto, taught her soprano. She also studied at the Russian Ballet Academy and learned to play the piano at the Toronto Conservatory.
Career
Luttrell's upbringing in dance and music naturally led her to the stage. Her professional debut was in the musical "Miss Saigon" at the Toronto Musical Theatre. She then went on to participate in other productions such as "Goblin Market" (based on Christina Rossetti's poem), "Las Meninas", and "Once on This Island".
As a teenager, Luttrell moved to Los Angeles and began appearing in small roles in TV series such as "ER", "Charmed", and "Forever Knight". Unsatisfied with the roles she was offered at the time, she decided to quit her acting career and enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles to study architecture. However, in the same year (2004), she auditioned for a role that brought her the most fame of her career – the role of Teyla Emmagan in the TV series "Stargate Atlantis".
Personal Life
In June 2007, producers of the series "Stargate Atlantis" confirmed that Luttrell and her husband, Lloyd Bateman, were expecting a child. This pregnancy was written into the script of the show. In October 2007, Luttrell gave birth to a son named Caden Dar. She currently lives in Vancouver, Canada with her family.
Luttrell has a younger sister, Erica Luttrell, who is also an actress.
